Picking strategy is one of the biggest drivers of fulfilment speed. Here's a breakdown of the three most effective methods and when to use each.

Picking — the act of retrieving items from their storage locations to fulfil an order — accounts for 50–75% of warehouse labour cost in most operations. Getting the strategy right is one of the highest-leverage improvements a fulfilment operation can make.

Zone picking divides the warehouse into sections, with dedicated pickers assigned to each zone. Each picker only touches items in their assigned area. This reduces travel time dramatically in large facilities and allows pickers to develop deep familiarity with their zone's layout. Wave picking groups orders into batches (waves) based on carrier cut-off times or priority. All orders in a wave are picked simultaneously, then consolidated and packed.
